Church History

Christ Church has been a place of worship and a part of this community for over 135 years.   We represent a fine and ongoing tradition.   General McLean,  with a small group, petitioned the Diocese of Long Island for ‘ a Chapel in Bellport.’ and in 1897 the building designed by Alonzo Rich, was begun.  During the previous ten years,  services had been held in Temperance Hall and above the Village shops..  The first service in the church building was May 15, 1898.

We are indebted to those who through the years enriched our church with gifts.  Parish records show a host of kind friends gave furnishings – our carved altar, stained glass windows, carved oak chairs, altar cross and a carved tabernacle door by a survivor of the Bellport High School fire.

In the 1960s, the addition of Rand Hall, our Parish Hall, (designed by John Lancaster and Wallace Budny)  increased our space to include not only rooms for Christian Education, but  community activities as part of our Parish Life.  Our own Christmas Fair, Concerts, and Yoga classes enjoy the hall.

We build on the shoulders of others, and the church progressed through the times with each Rector playing a unique part.  We are part of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island and very much a part of the Village of Bellport.  We are a warm, welcoming parish family with many interests. And…we have the most wonderful coffee hour on Sunday after 10 am worship.  Come, join us!

Welcome!

We are thrilled that you have found us! Please look around the website to see if this would be a place you could call your church home. On the Contact Us page, you may include your email, phone, a message and prayer request.

The Christ Church Prayer Garden, tucked on the East side of the building, has been carefully planted and lovingly maintained by our parishioner, Jean Coakley. Through four seasons of greenery and flowers, it is a place of peace and rest for all to enjoy. Birds and bunnies are regular visitors. Come, sit, feel the wonder of God’s creation!
